When conducting scientific research, one cannot attempt a study with the purpose of merely supporting his/her hypothesis; whatever that hypothesis may be. This type of intent results in biased, untrustworthy, and basically worthless results. The same can be said for academic discourse. If discussion exists for the sole purpose of affirming the opinions we already have; we might as well just stop talking to one another. The idea of ignoring the gifts of the mind, given to us by God, in lieu of a comfortable exisitence within our own uncomplicated paint-by-numbers sprituality is one that makes me reluctant to claim any denomination at all.
